Premiere Pro: blur a face in a video clip
Premiere's mask tracker will follow a moving face through a clip, and it's genuinely useful — but it drifts, and every clip needs its own correction pass.
How to blur a face in Premiere Pro
The core technique is one effect, one mask, and the tracker to follow the face through the clip. It works on a static shot in a couple of minutes; a handheld shot takes longer because of the correction pass in step 5.
- Apply Gaussian Blur to the clip. Select the clip on the timeline, open the Effects panel, find
Gaussian Blur, and drag it onto the clip. In the Effect Controls panel, raise Blurriness until a test frame is unrecognisable — this blurs the whole frame for now. - Draw a mask around the face. In Effect Controls, expand Gaussian Blur and click the ellipse mask tool. Draw an oval over the face on the frame you're viewing. This restricts the blur to just that shape.
- Feather the mask edge. With the mask selected, increase Mask Feather slightly so the blurred region blends into the sharp footage rather than cutting off in a hard circle.
- Turn on tracking. In the mask's properties, click the tracking (play-arrow) icon next to the mask. Premiere analyses the footage and moves the mask to follow the face frame by frame. Let it run to the end of the clip.
- Scrub through and correct drift. This is the step people skip and shouldn't. Play the clip back at full speed and at half speed. Wherever the mask lags behind a turn of the head or a fast movement, pause, manually reposition the mask at that frame, and re-run tracking from there. A face that turns in profile or gets partly blocked will need at least one manual correction.
- Duplicate for a second face. The tracker follows one shape. For a second person, copy the Gaussian Blur effect onto a fresh instance (or duplicate the mask), reposition it on that face, and track it independently.
- Export. Standard
File > Export Media. Premiere does not strip location metadata from the source clip automatically — that has to be handled separately if it matters.
Where the tracker breaks down
Premiere's tracker is genuinely decent for a face that stays roughly frontal and evenly lit. It struggles with fast turns, motion blur, a hand passing in front of the face, or a subject walking from a bright area into shade — the tracked point loses confidence and the mask starts to slide or freeze. None of that is a bug; it's tracking a 2D region on a face that's a 3D object turning through the frame, and it will drift on some fraction of any handheld shot.
The real cost is the scrub-and-correct pass in step 6. A single clean 10-second clip of someone facing the camera might need zero corrections. The same 10 seconds of someone talking and gesturing usually needs three or four manual fixes, each one meaning you pause, drag the mask, and re-track from that point forward. Multiple faces multiply this linearly — two people means two masks, two tracks, two correction passes.
It's also worth deciding upfront whether you need the mask to survive a re-cut. If you trim or re-order the clip after tracking, the mask's keyframes are tied to the original in and out points, and a hard trim in the middle of a tracked region can leave the mask referencing frames that no longer line up the way you expect. Track after your cuts are locked, not before, if the timeline is still likely to change.

When Premiere is still the right call
If the blur needs to sit inside a larger edit — cutting between clips, colour grading, syncing audio — do it in Premiere as part of that timeline. There's no reason to round-trip a shot through another app just for one face when you're already assembling the sequence there.
